CARTAGENA, Colombia

I was extremely excited to begin my first experience of South America in Cartagena. Cartagena also called Cartagena de Indias is a beautiful coastal city located on the northeastern coast of Colombia. I stayed in a loft I found on AirBNB which is 2 minutes away from the Rafael Nรบรฑez International Airport. From this loft, a breathtaking view of the city welcomed me. If you are staying close to the airport, you will find many convenience stores, smaller restaurants and a beach strip within walking distance. This beach is great for romantic strolls, watching the sunset and playing beach sports, however I recommend saving your swimming/ snorkeling for the more pristine beaches those on Las Islas de Rosario which you can get to by boat.

El Centro Historicรณ is a must see when visiting Cartagena. It is a colorful cluster of traditional buildings, souvenir shops, restaurants and monuments. There are free tours that run throughout the day there so definitely take advantage of those to learn as much as you can on the history of this old town. One of the monuments I was excited to visit was the wall of love which is essentially an old fort. This popular tourist location attracts many street vendors and performers which add to the charisma of the town. Walking around El Centro could take you half a day to see everything including restaurant and store stops so go early.

Luckily where I was staying I could get around to most places by foot. Anywhere outside of walking distance I relied on UBER. The taxis (mostly yellow Kia's) were more expensive and could easily hike up there price during the ride, so if possible just stick with UBER. I only spent 3 days in Cartagena but during the short visit I fell in love.
